Maintain Insurance Coverage with Advance Planning for Unpaid Leave of Absence
March 4, 2024

If you are planning to take an unpaid leave of absence, make sure you take the necessary steps before your leave of absence starts to make sure you maintain your insurance coverage.

Visit the Universities of Wisconsin Employee Benefits Leave of Absence page for information about the different types of leave and for details about planning for a leave of absence.

You can continue to pay for insurance by prepaying the employee share of premiums prior to the leave of absence, or by personal payment throughout the leave of absence. You also have the option of letting your insurance coverage lapse.

If you are preparing for a leave of absence, reach out to your Benefits Contact to plan, ask questions, and complete the required paperwork. You should complete an Unpaid Leave of Absence Insurance Selections Form prior to beginning an unpaid leave of absence.
